More students today are utilizing the changes in technology to their advantage, as time progresses as opposed to two decades ago.
Today, it is uncommon for students on campus to not have some sort of technology occupying their time. From Iphones, to IPods, Blackberries and Nintendo DS units, technology continues to change and advance, creating a new effect on not only students, but also society in general.
“Technology has changed and affected my life a lot I guess,” said SAIT student Nathan Miles.
“When my parents were growing up, they never had the chance to experience half of the technological advances our generation is, and sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming.”
According to AngelFire.com, technology advances in general have influenced people to become a lot lazier not only in their work ethic but also in their day-to-day lives. People expect easier ways, because they assume technology can solve simple problems. This could start to become a serious potential problem especially for students who are attending university or college.
“When I was growing up we had to work for everything and anything we wanted or needed,” Calgary parent Paul Mackinnon said.
“We didn’t have cell phones, or computers when if we had a problem we could just Google it. We resolved our problems with our own judgment.”
With parents of the Baby Boomer generation noticing the effects technology is placing on their children, some feel it is becoming a growing concern and there is nothing they can do to prevent the change from happening. Every year, millions of new gadgets, websites and TV shows are created. Some of these are for pure entertainment, and some actually have helped society progress dramatically. However, technology is playing the dominant role in many students’ lives today, almost to the point where it consumes them entirely, leaving a futuristic vision of the world to be lazy and less self-sufficient.
“I think technology has a great impact on not only my life but my friends’ lives too,” SAIT student Reid Stanek said.
“It does scare me a bit to see students on campus constantly occupying their time with a cell phone or whatever. Whatever happened to reading a book instead?”
Because technology has had such an impact on student’s lives when it comes to their studies, these can be distractions, which cause students to be less focused on what is truly important. These technological distractions can cause some students to be careless and lazy with their studies.
“I think it’s critically important we educate our children and students on how to problem solve without using some technology device,” Calgary teacher Steve Barg said.
“Either way, if we don’t do anything about it now, they are just going to have to learn the hard way when they are faced with difficult problems in the real world, which they can’t use some sort of technology to help them.”
